However, the message that was to inform Romeo of the situation never reaches him. He only learns of Juliet's apparent death and returns to Verona in secret. When he arrives at the crypt, he finds Juliet seemingly lifeless and, consumed by sadness, drinks a poison to join himself in death.
Juliet wakes up soon after to find Romeo's body by her side. Desperate, she takes a dagger and kills herself. The two families discover the tragedy and realize the terrible price of their hatred. Standing before the lifeless bodies of Romeo and Juliet, the Montagues and the Capulets make peace.
